awkward
  • finishing season one of once upon a time (i'm obsessed), and then realizing season two is nowhere to be found.
  • stress-induced forgetfulness and having to call all those people to apologize for forgetting appointments and interviews.
  • when your delicious cinnamon rolls take on the nasty taste of the spicy soup that was previously in the supposedly-clean ziploc container. still trying to get that taste out of my mouth.
  • trespassing to take outfit pictures.
  • having to take stacks of unread novels back to the library every month.
  • realizing you last shirt button is missing, leaving your stomach half showing--in public.
  • when no one tells you about the smudge of chocolate on your forehead.

awesome
  • when my mama and siblings come to provo to visit.
  • getting hand-me-downs from family who is refurnishing or simply has too much in the attic. who needs new stuff when you can get family heirlooms?
  • sewing a beautiful shower curtain with my grandma for my new house.
  • when other bloggers share their success secrets.
  • cereal as an evening snack (a habit i owe to my dad).
  • getting a late easter package full of fun stuff from my mom.
  • online banking.
  • a money-savvy fiance who knows how to save (i never realized how much of an impulse buyer slash spender i am until we started comparing notes...)

the sudden friction between one foot and the floor that made me stumble and fall during zumba class. the room has wall-to-wall mirrors, so yep. everyone saw.
realizing i was dressed like christina braverman when i walked into neiman marcus yesterday. i'm sorry, but a slouchy sweater and a sports bra just doesn't cut it when you're at the makeup counters with beautiful, classy russian perfume experts.
getting out of the shower to find i left all the towels in the other room.
the 38 emails a day i get now that i signed up on linkedin. i'm thinking that was a mistake.

Awkward
  • Being flirty chatty with a guy who, when we stood up, was a foot shorter than I.
  • Only one person coming to my Relief Society activity.
  • When a giant rug caught as I opened a door to the point where I couldn't squeeze through and had to go in another door. And of course, there was someone right behind me.
  • Being the only one around when the BYU soccer team kicked a ball over a giant fence. I tromped through waist-high weeds and thistles to get their ball and then mustered all the arm force I possess and managed to barely clear the fence. While they watched.
  • How the smell of dumpster doesn't only make make me nauseous; it also makes me want to cry.
  • Bragging to the world about how cool I am for patching my own bike tire, only to find it flat again the next morning.
  • Pumping myself up in spin class by repeating, "Katniss Everdeen wouldn't even be out of breath. Be tough, be tough, be tough like Katniss..."
  • The days there seems to be no hope in looking any better than a doormat.
  • The tanning lotion spot on my neck that looks like a hickey, confirmed by two people so far.
  • Brother telling me his "gluteus maximus flexor" is sore. Thanks, thanks for that.
  • Getting dressed according to the weather at 7am. Just because it's only 60 degrees doesn't mean I'll be chilly all day and that I should wear a long skirt and long sleeved shirt. Excuse me while I go fan myself.
  • Hitting a guy in the butt with the purse on my arm when I hugged him.

Awesome
  • How my finance professor, who is Russian and as lovely as any movie star, could get Chris Hemsworth if she wanted.
  • A surprise trip home.
  • Anticipating The Hunger Games coming to the dollar theater. It's like Christmas Eve...
  • Summer rain.
  • Being back in piano lessons.
  • Fireworks with five-year-olds who want to hang out with me.
  • THE FOURTH OF JULY.
  • My birthday month.
  • Summer freckles sprinkled across my cheeks, neck and shoulders.
  • Waking up in a cold room because it finally cooled off during the night.
  • Little brother donating a Flying J gift card to my gasoline-for-coming-home fund.

 Because it's pretty.
Awkward
Harley:
-When I got to work this morning I realize that I had little yellow spots all over my shirt. Not cute ones. Little food marks that I missed when I decided this shirt was clean and I could wear it again without washing it. Oops.
-Having to jump when I enter the bathroom at work to get the lights to turn on. Curse sensor lights and their apparent heightism.
-A boy saying, "You look good. I'd kiss you."
Jane:
-When a friendly person innocently said hi to me on the street, but by the time I checked over both shoulders to see if he was actually talking to someone behind me, the time has come and gone to say hi back.
-Spilling avocado slices on white pants.
-Getting black all over the bum of white pants from my bike seat
-Slipping on water in Target and falling to the ground
-Slipping on water two days later at work and falling on the same knee, which is now purple
-Being chatty/flirty with a boy in class {and thus sacrificing understanding what's going on}, only to get a, "Nice to meet you," when the bell rings.
Awesome
-Jane and I riding our bikes through a huge rain and wind storm.
-The cutest baby ducks you ever did see swimming behind their momma.
-Getting a freaking sweet new blog design.
-The thunder storm that is happening outside.
-Michael doing allllllllllllll the dishes.

Awk. & Awesome.

Awk.
-When you take the last step before opening a door and your foot slips on the slush, propelling your legs apart into an awful almost-splits.
-The caramel candies called "Nips." They really didn't think that one through.
-Walking out of the bathroom with your shirt unintentionally tucked in.
-Forgetting fake glasses are not sunglasses. Nope. Can't people watch in fake glasses.
-When you can find the men's bathroom but not the women's. You'd think they'd be close.
-Seeing a man leaning over a man-hole-type-thing yelling down into it, "Just push up! Push harder!" Well this is weird.
-Taking a sarcastic text seriously and worrying about it for two hours before you realize they were kidding.
-Running into Plato's Closet to use the bathroom, finding it locked, running next door to use someone else's bathroom, finding no bathroom, returning to Plato's and the employees asking you if you need to use their bathroom. Yes. Yes I do. Turns out they always keep it locked and have to unlock it every time someone needs to use it. What are we, four years old?
-Finishing lunch before noon. Now what? I have class until 7pm tonight...Vending machine, here I come.
-The freakout that happens after your feather earring attacks your ear and you think it's a large bug or a small bird.
-Losing the doorknob to our room. Don't even know how that happened.

Awesome
-Being home with so much extended family and one particular boy.
-The warm woodstove at home.
-Brother being the funniest Daddy Warbucks in any high school musical.
-"Angel" by Jack Johnson.
-Being able to do 40 push ups in a row.
- From Harley - Your husband surprising you with three consecutive lunch dates in a row. The third of those being a trip to the grocery store because you haven't been in three weeks.

Awkward...
-Getting a drink from the drinking fountain, thinking it tastes oddly like lemon water, then noticing old orange peels in the garbage one foot from your face. That's not lemon.
-Leaning back in your desk to stretch and running your hand through the hair of the person behind you. I swear that was an accident...
-Upside down engagement photos. Can't even tell what they look like.
-When Harley sucked up her green inked pen instead of blowing it down to get rid of the bubble. Her tongue may or may not still be green.
-Asking someone if they have a broken tooth when, upon closer examination, that tooth is very much unbroken.
-Mistaking the Angels for the Braves. The A's look exactly the same to me.

Awesome...
-A day off from school and work. I LOVE SLEEPING IN.
-Needing hair products. Going to target. Picking up hair products. Then getting one for free. Just because.
-Cats.
-Google Translate.
-Knowing everyone in a small-town pizza joint.
-When a high school coach pays for your pizza at that small-town pizza joint.
-Spending the entire weekend with a certain boy.
*Disclaimer: All the awks are true, but not all of them happen to me. I pick a few up here and there from friends who tell me their own awkward moments.

Awkward, Annoying & Awesome

Awkward...
-Flip flops on men in the winter. They're almost too much in the summer.
-Patchwork plaid shorts on men in winter. Ditto.
-Realizing at the end of a good, long Sunday that my slip has been hanging out a few inches in the back, all day.
-When the pianist plays into the next verse unexpectedly. Everyone looks around at each other, starts singing again, but only to be left awkwardly in the middle of a phrase when Mr. Pianist realizes he wasn't supposed to play that verse anyway and stops. Just like that.
-Incorrectly pronouncing the word "pianist." It's PEA-ANN-IST. Say the WHOLE word, thank you very much.
-Asking a freshly RM friend through text "how the marriage prep is going," {referring to the fact that his sister is getting married in a couple days} but the sweet RM misunderstands and replies with a text that says he hasn't found anyone yet, but he's still looking. Nope, nope, that's not what I meant, pal. Sorry about that. Now who feels more awkward about that exchange, me or you?
-Writing about the importance of abstinence until marriage for a religion class and Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" comes on my Pandora.
-Flirting with a boy on the phone when his sister is your roommate and 10 feet away.
-Forgetting deodorant.
-When you put your heavy backpack on a desk and while you're looking away, the desk tips forward. Little top-heavy, anyone?
-Not realizing that your skirt was tucked under until you were all the way across campus. WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME.

Annoying...
-The kid playing with a slinky next to me during a test.
-Walking back and forth across campus 7, count them, 7 different times. Maybe I should have planned my class schedule a little bit better.
-The battery in my toothbrush slowly giving out.
-Having the tabs on your car expire. Then getting a ticket. Do you really have nothing better to do provo police?! REALLY?

Awesome...

-This picture is from when Jane and I first became friends. We were also tan. I think that qualifies as two awesome things.
-Colbie Caillat's cover of "Here Comes the Sun."
-Spanish nicknames.
- Being married to a danish man that makes mean crepes whenever it suits my fancy. I am spoiled ok? SPOILED.
-Forever 21. Sometimes I hate this store. This week it is on the awesome list. Hello new polka dot shirt. I am saving you for spring.
-Freshly made beds.
-Comfortable flats. I thinks these puppies are hard to come by. That is why I only have a few treasured pairs and boy to I love them.
-First paychecks. WE ARE REAL ADULTS!
-Killing your stats test that you were mucho nervous for. BOOM BABY.
-Writing in all Caps. Emotion people. Emotion.
-Homemade valentines.
-Happy friends.

awk awk awk and a little awesome.

Awkward
-When you go to squat down to get your backpack off the floor in a restaurant and catch your bum on the chair-back of someone behind you. I'm just going to pretend that didn't happen.
-Chest hair on someone wearing a boyscout uniform.
-When a classmate says in class, "My infectious diseases professor told us..."
-When two married couples in front of you all high five each other because the teacher says you're in the minority if you wait until after marriage to have sex. I suppose that also qualifies as awesome, but mostly I just felt awkward.
-Realizing too late you let your cute little innocent cousin watch the scene in "17 Again" where Michelle Trachtenberg decides she's a tiger. Shudder.
-Forgetting to finish my makeup. And realizing it halfway through the day.
-Getting the large-print-need-a-reverse-magnifying-glass-to-read version of a book on hold. I'll pass on that, let's try again.

Awesome
-Cancelled class on test days. I'm not sure why that isn't mandatory yet.
-Shea Cashmere lotion on sale!
-Managing to keep track of my good lipgloss and .38 Pilot pen for more than a month.

-A gingham tool set -- yessssss.
-Signing up for only TWO classes for spring term. That'll be a new experience.
-Becoming an expert calzone-maker.
-Haylee's wardrobe that's up for sale. I already bought something.

Awkward:
-The boy who fell asleep in the class right before yours and continues to sleep until half way through your class. He wakes up. Confused. Dazed. He packs up his belongings and leaves.
-Goldfish crackers for breakfast. not so good.
-When someone tells a joke but no one hears it but you, and you're too far away to even give them a courtesy laugh.
-The courtesy laugh.
-When a coworker notices how often you spend watching and listening to Ron+Hermione montage videos and asks you if you'd like them to just bring their HP collection to work.
-little junior high kids running around everywhere for a theater festival. I feel like I should understand them seeing as I used to be one... but it just makes me cringe.
-The water fountain when the person next to you stops drinking and all of sudden you find yourself with a nose full of water.
-Career fairsssssssssssssssssssss. please hire me. or give me and internship. please.

Awesome:
-Youtube videos of Ron+Hermione. Oh how I love them.
- Date night. Bowling anyone?
-A 2 hour workshop with one of the best dancers in the world.
-Homemade meals.
-How energized your mind feels after an amazing work out.
-Sweatpants.
-the boy whistling last Christmas I gave you my heart.

Awkward
-The day my sisters and I started calling each other "silsty."
-The people who complain about walking to campus to work out. The irony.
-Poor sister leaving her wallet in my purse when she went back to school.
-Poor sister trying to explain to the post office people she couldn't show them her ID to get the package because her ID was inside said package.
-When autocorrect changes, "Meet me in the newsroom" to, "Meet me in the bedroom."
-When you lose a lotion scandalously called "Sensuous Nude" and find it the next day on your male coworker's desk. Umm...sorry, that's mine.

Annoying
-The honesttogoodness 30 emails I get from Pinterest everyday.
-How cold my forearms get when I wear 3/4 length sleeves.
-When letters get lost in the abyss of the postal system. Dumb.
-Umm...is it really necessary/possible to take up THE ENTIRE SIDEWALK.
-Paying for internet that my computer can never seem to find.

Awesome
-When little sisters compliment your face even though it's a morning face.
-When sister risks her life to take a bus down to Provo to spend the weekend with you.
-Finally learning how to put fake dreads in my hair. Thank you silsty.
-Gifts from Harley on terrible Tuesdays.
-Half off sushi at Happy Sumo.
-A boss who keeps track of and celebrates every weird holiday, including National Popcorn Day, National Pancake Day, National Chocolate Day and National Bread Day. HelloILoveYou.

-Running into ex-boyfriend on a date.
-The "should I hug him or shouldn't I" dance.
-Thinking you are doing something really awesome at work and then being told it actually wasn't so awesome.
-Failing a current events quiz when that's basically your major.
-This Picture...

Awkward/Awesome-
-To the lady who climbed into our car while we were at the post office... we think of you often. It wasn't until you were actually inside the car sitting down pulling the door closed that you realize we weren't your family. Funny considering we were in a gold minivan and you were driving a black Honda.

Awesome
-Cuddling.
-Getting a hair cut when you haven't had one for 6 MONTHS PEOPLE.

our own.
- Homemade jam from your neighbors. YUM.

Awkward.

-Accidentally sending a text to the wrong person. Especially when the text is complaining about having cramps.
-Staying in a ball during yoga due to said cramps.
-Wearing white ju jitsu pants around campus.
-Stopping to look at a poster 5 feet in front of a landscape telescope, and the guys have to ask you to please move your torso out of their frame.
-Getting a surprise attack in self defense. I apparently haven't learned as much as I thought because that girl had me pinned to the ground.
-Overhearing this telephone conversation:
"I just don't think I like boys anymore...I think I'm asexual."

{These aren't mine, and they shall remain anonymous for the safety of the awkward haha...}
-When your roommate wants to hold your hand and asks if she can have your boyfriend.
-When you don't know the bishop's counselors names because you haven't been to your actual ward yet and then get called into an interview with one of the unknowns. Unknown #1 is sitting with his back to you in his office, so naturally you say "um brother reese?" hoping to get lucky. Nothing. *Awkwardly clear throat.* Still nothing. Finally he turns around and says, "Do I look like Brother Reese?" Not knowing if he was joking or not, all I could do was one of those hesitant 'ha. ha has' Unknown #2 luckily comes out of the doors and I coward away. I never want to see unknown #1's face again.

Awkward.

Awkward...
-When your ear suction-cups to someone's face during a hug.
-Tripping over a 4 foot high stool in a crowded hallway.
-When the poor math TA doesn't remember the basic math of lesson 1. Here, buddy, you can look off my paper since I figured it out before you.
-Overalls are coming back. Oh baby.
-What exactly are 'magic markers'? I'm sorry, but those were gone by the time I started using markers.
-Leaving bananas too close to a loaf of bread. It's like banana bread, but nasty.
-Being hungry for lunch at 10:30am. That's when you know you woke up and ate breakfast way to early.
-Guy walking on campus wearing a t-shirt on top and a towel skirt on bottom...
-Making eye contact with someone when they trip right in front of you.
-A wedding album on Facebook with 200 photos. You weren't there? No worries, look through the album at the second-by-second still footage.
-When a girl in the stall next to you breaks her necklace with a bazillion beads and it explodes everywhere. Do you say something? Just pick up the ones in your stall? Walk out quickly before anything else awkward happens?
-Not realizing until class has started that you're on the wrong floor. In the wrong class. And you have to crawl over 24 people to get out. Oh, 'scuze me. Sorry. Pardon my huge backpack that just hit you in the face.
-Trying to pay for lunch with an expired debit card.

Awkward Saturday {I like to move things around}

Saturday, April 23, 2011

Part I.
Here you have it--a week off
A W K W A R D.
p.s. sorry if it's overwhelming. it was an awkward week.

-Coworker saying, "I say 'bless you' for all bodily functions."
-Harley's little WC experience. It deserves its own post. {To give you an idea: it involved her & another girl, two stalls, and no toilet paper.}
-Getting sick on car rides.
-Major PDA. Just because the sun comes out does not mean you have the right to suck each others' faces off RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.
-Men having long fingernails. Guys, cut 'em off. That's disgusting.
-The women in Relief Society who talk really loud. It's so uncomfortable.
-Pickles.
-Me ending phone conversations. {If you agree that I am, please don't tell me. I'm working on it, I promise.}
-The stuffed animal cat, Prissy, my grandpa whips out at every family gathering. The thing's meows give me nightmares.
-Taking the risk of posting something flirty on a boy's wall and never getting a response. Apparently he's not interested.
-Sporting homework hair all of finals week.
-Brushing too closely to a Smith's employee. Sorry...It was my bag, honest.
-Running into The Cocoa Bean just to use their bathroom and averting eye contact or they'll for sure know what I'm doing.
-Taking 20 minutes to put on mascara when the tube is almost out.
-Trying to sit down in tight jeans.

Part II.
I'm headed in my favorite direction today
and into the best place around:
i d a h o.
I swear the earth holds its breath for me while I'm away.
It breathes again when I cross the state line,
I can feel it.

this is from last year when i moved home. isn't it lovely?

Good think I A L W A Y S do a 360 in the mirror before leaving the bathroom.

See Harley's lovely bracelet? And my pretty pendant? We made those with our adorable Vienna friend, Breanna. She's lovely, crafty, and one of the sweetest people we know. Go take a peek at her inspiring blog!

Hello, It's Jane. {Harley is better at posting photos, which is why I keep writing under in her posts. At times like this--she posts, I write.}

We like Awkward & Awesome, but let's face it. Everyone really just wants to read the Awkwards. So. Here's a week of 'em.

A Week of Awkward
-I came *this close* to walking out of the WC with my dress caught in my slip. That would have made my #1 most embarrassing moment.
-I misunderstood my professor when he said the box of cupcakes were for the guest speaker--and not us students apparently.
-My lunch was the source when someone said, "What's that smell? It's really strong..." Come on people, have you never smelled fajitas before?!
-When someone calls you, and they're so sure they have the right number. Are you sure this isn't Jessie's phone? Yup...Pretty sure. And then they hang up without another word. Happened 3 times this week.
-Boy walking past talking on a cell phone about the lady doctor. I have no idea why, but I felt seriously uncomfortable. It better be his wife's lady doctor, and that is all I am going to say about that. {From H.}
-Making eye contact with other people in the bathroom through the mirror. Try it. Or don't.
-Trying to covertly film people for a class video. When they catch you... they give some not so nice looks. {From H.}
-Boys in aerobics classes. I'm sorry. That makes me sexist, but I don't care. {From H.}
-I tried to flirt with the man behind the counter in the jewelry store in the mall, but how can that be successful when it appears as though I'm in there looking at engagement rings??
-Harley said something unmentionable about the girls a bit too loud and an innocent boy heard it all. Oops.

xoxo,
j.

P.S. I want to be a hippie. I wrote about it last night in my journal, and today Harley told me I was one. Couldn't have been a more perfect compliment.

I have been thinking...

About things that are awkward. We opted out of an awkward and awesome post yesterday (more on that later) so I didn't get to share my favorite moment of complete awkwardness from the week. So here we go. I was studying the night away for my crazy hard Finance exam when I had to go use the facilities. Yes I just said that.  And on my way out I ran into a couple. Quite literally ran the swinging bathroom door in a couple. Dancing. In the library. At 10:30 at night. Now not that I am unromantic or something, but I would generally assume that dimly lit cramped hallways are not the best locations for an impromptue dance. ESPECIALLY right outside of the bathroom! Don't you need music! Don't you need ambiance! I don't know maybe it is just a personal thing. Anyway so after ramming them with the bathroom door I ducked my head in shame, muttered, "Oops umm er sorry" and ran away.
The end.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Much love.
-Har

sometimes we're awkward. but mostly awesome.

Awkward.
-Being the pedestrian in an intersection where cars from every direction are somehow turning toward you. Do you go for it or scurry back?
-The Oompa Loompas walking around campus because DanceSport {ballroom comp} starts tonight. Orange spray tans, fake eyelashes to China, and slicked buns. Who decided that would be the requirements? And for men and women nonetheless...
-People posting bodily functions and other nasties on their Facebook statuses. We don't want to know what your dog rolled in or what came out of your nose last night. Spare me, I beg you.
-Wedding announcements containing not one, but 13 photos. I mean, obviously they look so fabulous in all of them to only choose one. Everyone wants a collage of a couple in love on their fridge.
-Mustache March in Provo. Actually, mustaches in general are awkward.
-The taller stair in my house I trip over every single time I run up the stairs.
-This text + photo from Sister: "Torpedo much?? I'd Awkward and Awesome that."

Awesome.

-When teachers cancel class. I feel a smidge of guilt for not being more sorry that the reason for canceling is due to him being sick...
-It's the season for Samoas and Thin Mints, my lovelies. I give you permission to freeze your boxes and break 'em out when the sugar fast is ovahhh. I tried to talk my mama into giving me justification for eating only one yesterday. She refused. Thank goodness.
-There's talk of making Casual Thursdays a regular thing.
-The pair of black glitter TOMS on their way to my house through the post.
-This perfect scene in The Young Victoria. I get goosebumps every time.
-Sister is coming to visit tomorrow night!
-This picture Sister came up with of two of our favorite people: Syd and Junie B. Jones who bear freakish resemblance.
