3 6 5 Days of Journaling | May

Friday, June 27, 2014

Two in one day?! I am all caught up now. For your viewing pleasure, my May journal. Someone asked me one time if I worry about people blowing up the photos and reading my actual words and the short answer is no. I am trying to be more unapologetically honest so I think this is a good manifestation of that.

Best parts of May // Going to Denmark for the Michael's Brothers Wedding, made a little terrarium (that I have now totally killed... ), HARRY POTTER LAND

Have a great weekend!

3 6 5 Days of Journaling | April

Since next week is July I figured I should probably get around to posting my April and May journaling pages. Yay procrastination. Still loving this challenge. Getting a little lax, but that makes sense after journaling almost every single day for half a year.

Best parts of April // Jane coming to visit me, being brave about my career, going to Orlando, Michael finally coming home from NC

Does someone good at taking pictures want to come take them for me? I used Lightroom to edit these bad boys and if I am being honest I really don't quite understand how it works. I have no idea why i thought this shiny gold background would look good... insert wide eyed emoji here. I have lots of good ideas I'm just not so good at capturing them. Give me an iPhone and VSCO and I'm good, but a DSLR and Lightroom, heaven help us all! Happy Weekend you nuts.

our 10 journaling essentials

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

By now you know journals are one of our most favorite things. We both grew up writing out our lives, and we even built our friendship over journaling. Years of practice have helped us refine our personal styles of both the art and written aspects, and we love sharing our tips and ideas with anyone who will listen. Whether you're a seasoned writer or newbie journaler, hopefully this post sparks an idea or two. There's nothing that makes us happier (seriously!) than hearing someone say they dusted off their diary and started writing again. Keep reading for our 10 journaling essentials!
Washi tape is versatile--use it for everything from a page border to labels for pictures. You can find washi tape on Etsy, at craft stores, or even Walmart and Target.
We love our instax cameras, but any photos will work. They'll provide a great snapshot into that moment of your life paired with your writing. And don't forget the scissors up there in the left corner--keep them close. We're always needing them to cut washi tape and magazine pictures.
You had a collage phase in your teen years too, right? Actually, I guess I'm not fully out of that phase. Old magazines are great for accent illustrations/phrases or collages. Harley and I have created many collages in our journals.
You probably won't have access to new, interesting business cards every day, but definitely grab them anytime you visit somewhere new. I took one from each store and restaurant Harley and I went to when I was in Chicago, and they made a fun page in my journal.
Again, we like these for collages and other illustrative purposes. The Anthropologie catalog pages create magical backgrounds. Some of our other favorites: Free People and J. Crew.
I'm sure you've heard it before, but Pilot G-2 pens are our favorite. We like the .35 - .5 tips best.
If you're not attaching scrappy stuff with washi tape, we suggest photo splits. They're double sided and, therefore, inconspicuous.
Project Life cards can add a lovely element to art journal pages, but also notice scrappy-type items in little shops, in your mom's craft room, or on the street. I found an old playing card on the road in Chicago and used it on a journal page. I've also picked up dropped shopping lists in parking lots before. You can find gems everywhere!

why blogging isn't enough

Monday, April 28, 2014

i'm a dabbler by nature. i dabble in hobbies. friendships. passions. lusting after small bright flames that dwindle only moments after the match is lit.

journaling is my constant. i remember my first journal. it was given to me when i was 8. a purple book with the word "journal" in gold foil given as a gift on my baptism day. after writing my first entry i tore it out and rewrote it with all of these fancy contractions and code words. now i honestly am not sure what the thing says. i wish 8 year old me was around to decipher it.

through middle school i drew caricatures of boys i liked and doodled frogs and cows. writing haphazardly about exactly what i did that day. this then this then this then this then this then this. the play by play.

in high school most tortured posts were propelled by heart break and a devastating self body image. i read those sad words and vow that never for any amount of money would i step back in time to that moment.

in 2010 i went on a study abroad where we had a "travel writing class." oh, glorious louise plummer. the best professor i have ever had. she bent the rules and we spent the whole summer journaling. reading our journals out loud to each other. speed writing about butter. gluing and pasting anything we could find. stealing business cards and napkins where ever we went. we were the journal bandits! moleskins were our weakness.

i distinctly remember all seven of us sitting around on beds and couches in a hotel room in cinque terra. after a long day we were curled up in bed writing. heads bent over paper and pens. ideas and moments flowing onto paper. jane reciting the movie what a girl wants from memory because none of us could understand the italian.

i wrote in my journal "this is what bliss feels like. this is what it is like to be blissfully happy."

journaling helps me think. helps me slow down my thoughts enough to make sense of how i feel. i love the finality of it. the idea that in our life we literally get to close chapters if we want. after a less than stellar end to whirlwind relationship i had to step back and say "no more. this is done." i closed a journal i had only filled 1/3rd of the way through and said, "the end" while simultaneously opening a new journal to start another "beginning."

how i cherish those journals. all my journals. all 30+ journals and note books stuffed full of life. my life. and that is why i continue. why blogging just isn't enough. the tangible mess of my life is thrown into the tangible mess of my words written by my own pen. to me there is nothing better.

3 6 5 Days of Journaling | March

Saturday, April 12, 2014

Journaling Journaling makes me happy. I feel like March is always hard because there are no holidays off of work and the weather is generally terrible. One of the brightest spots was when my dear little michael came to visit me. He's great and I can't wait for him to move back to Chicago so we can LIVE IT UP this summer. Today was the first warm day, we are talking 68 people, and the whole city just came alive. It was like Chicago whispered, "Hey I'm sorry for the long winter, lets make this summer a good one eh?" I am not sure if I am ready to forgive, but I am definitely ready to forget. Tomorrow I am going to ride my bike. Annnnnnnd tangent.

March journaling was a little more black and white than usual. Funny how even the color palette can reflect your emotions in some round about way. Hope you like it!

Much love march and we're out.

3 6 5 days of journaling | february

Thursday, March 13, 2014

I have only missed 4 days of journaling this entire year kids. What a feeling. This is the longest I have ever held on to a new years resolution. Every night as I snuggle into bed, I prop a pillow under my chin and scribble anything and everything I want. After years of journaling I have found that you have to release any sort of preconceived notions as to what a journal should be or who it should reflect. This journal is not for my posterity, it doesn't have to show me in a superior light, it is simply mine. For me a me alone. How very few of those things we allow ourselves to have.

Sometimes I write about what was done that day, but often I find myself capturing in incredibly small moments in great detail. The moments where I feel somehow connected to this great big world and all the implications that go along with it. Writing has become more than a chore. It's a way to create. It's a way to get to know myself through those ink smeared words spilling on the page.
